Pearl Series known for its cute dimension compare to other Blackberry Series. Pearl 8120 is a great example. Slim, light, and fits on hand smart phone. It has pearl grey color as it’s named which make it look more elegant.

Like other Pearl Series, the navigation uses trackball. Letters nicely arranged in QWERTY with the numbers in the middle with various colors. By the way, different color with extra line makes the keypad as if divided onto two parts. Pearl 8120 is enhanced with SureType, a predictive text application; similar with T9 in mobile phone. As a RIM-made, this smart phone absolutely has Blackberry OS platform in order to fully support Blackberry. Although it doesn’t have more operating system like other mobile phones, but we can easily add third parties.

Mostly mobile phones use 3G, but it’s pathetic to see Pearl 8120 which still using GPRS/EDGE. Although we’re entertained through WiFi. Pearl 8120 is the first series which has WiFi among other Pearl Series. Although it’s for business purpose but doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun. The media player supports the conversion from Roxio, and able to play mostly audio or video format.

In my opinion, the sound produced by the speaker feels so low although been set to standard. Therefore, we prefer to use headset. The jackheadset 3.5mm enables us to use the regular headset for PC. It gives us more choices when we want to buy a better quality headset than in the package. The volume button itself located on the right body; it can be used as a zoom button for the camera or video recorder function.

Although the camera icon is differently located with the video camera icon but we can still easily move among the applications through the shortcuts on the menu. The camera has 2 MP, completed with lamp and mirror. The camera has 1600 x 1200. Meanwhile the video camera works on 240x180 format. In my opinion, generally the Pearl 8120 responds quite fast. The work applications or text-based works are easily opened, except when the Pearl 8120 is saving file contain pictures or video recordings.

The capacity of Pearl 8120 can be maximally added because Blackberry provides microSD slot. The slot is easily accessed and located on the left body. The mini USB port is used for PC connection besides recharging the battery. As long as the device connected to the PC through the wire, the battery is automatically recharged.

Unfortunately, the phone is not without its weaknesses. Although it has been upgraded with support for 3G, the phone does not have the extra camera to support video conference. The phone also has no memory card slots, however, the large storage (8GB or 16GB) makes up for it. Some critical functions are also missing, including video capture, MMS and support for Bluetooth stereo.

Well, thankfully, we can be sure that there will be more versions of iPhone to come, hopefully with improved features. For now, the Apple iPhone 3G is a lovely phone but may not cover all your basic needs.
